In everything he saw in the world, he found no beauty

Tinha uma grande fazenda, a maior da redondeza

He had a large farm, the biggest in the vicinity

Mas tinha um coração de fera, conhecido por suas proezas"

But he had a beastly heart, known for his exploits

Trabalhava para ele o negrinho Sebastião

Working for him was little Sebastião

Era uma pobre criança, que sofria em suas mãos

He was a poor child who suffered at his hands

Por ser muito religioso, era aquela judiação

For being very religious, it was a great suffering

Pra aumentar o espanto seu

To increase the astonishment

Sempre que falava em Deus, apanhava do patrão

Whenever he spoke of God, he was beaten by the boss

Veio a seca na fazenda, para tudo terminar

A drought came to the farm, to end everything

E o pretinho vendo aquilo, com seu patrão foi falar

And the little black boy, seeing that, went to talk to his boss

O senhor deve ter fé, para Deus deve rezar

Sir, you must have faith, you must pray to God

Faça um pedido em prece, que o Senhor lhe agradece

Make a request in prayer, and the Lord will thank you

E a chuva cairá

And the rain will fall

O patrão ficou furioso e no negrinho bateu

The boss became furious and beat the little black boy

Mas a surra foi tão forte, que o coitadinho morreu

But the beating was so strong that the poor boy died

Quando estava no caixão, seu patrão se aproximou

When he was in the coffin, his boss approached

Com desprezo e maldade, mostrando sua crueldade

With contempt and malice, showing his cruelty

Estas palavras falou:" tome lá negrinho

He spoke these words: "Take this, little black boy"

Leve essa moeda no caixão e diga lá pro seu Deus

Take this coin in the coffin and tell your God

Mandar chuva no meu chão

To send rain to my land

Já que acredita nele, leve pra Ele essa encomenda

Since you believe in Him, take this order to Him

E que mande dez tostões de chuva na minha fazenda"

And send ten coins of rain to my farm"

Logo depois do enterro veio um forte furacão

Soon after the burial, a strong hurricane came

Arrasou com a fazenda, inundou tudo pelo chão

Destroyed the farm, flooded everything on the ground

O negrinho apareceu entregou ao seu patrão

The little black boy appeared, handed it to his boss

Novecentos réis de troco porque a chuva que veio

Nine hundred réis in change because the rain that came

Foi somente um tostão

Was only a penny
