Quando chega o mês de agosto, o sertão fica esquisito

When the month of August arrives, the hinterland becomes peculiar

A fumaça vai baixando não se vê o infinito

The smoke descends, the infinite is not seen

A tardinha entristece quando canta o peixe frito

The evening saddens when the fried fish sings

Nas noites que tem luar o urutal dá seu grito

In the moonlit nights, the urutal gives its cry

É um lamento horripilante, chega me deixar aflito

It's a horrifying lament, it even makes me anxious

Mesmo assim amo demais esse meu sertão bendito

Even so, I love too much this blessed hinterland of mine

Os pirilampos passeiam na massega do capim

The fireflies stroll in the mass of the grass

A cigarra estridente canta no pé de jasmim

The strident cicada sings on the jasmine tree

O triste uivar de um lobo, na imensidão sem fim

The sad howling of a wolf in the endlessness

A coruja agourenta trás pensamentos ruins

The ominous owl brings bad thoughts

O galo que me desperta como se fosse um clarim

The rooster that awakens me as if it were a bugle

Mesmo assim o meu sertão, ainda é tudo para mim

Even so, my hinterland is still everything to me

Como é bonito ver o romper da alvorada

How beautiful it is to see the break of dawn

O curiango ainda canta sentado à beira da estrada

The nighthawk still sings sitting by the side of the road

As flores se desabrocham pelas ramas orvalhadas

The flowers bloom along the dewy branches

Deixando por entre os campos toda brisa perfumada

Leaving through the fields all perfumed breeze

Me despeço então da lua, minha doce namorada

So I say goodbye to the moon, my sweet girlfriend

Meu sertão é e será, minha eterna morada

My hinterland is and will be my eternal abode
