Certa feita me ajustei na estância do Seu Ponciano

Once upon a time, I settled in Seu Ponciano's ranch

Pra domar um bagual picaço que beirava cinco anos

To tame a spirited colt, nearly five years old

Crioulo ali dos queimados lindeiro da terra dura

A Criollo from the burnt lands, bordering the tough earth

Esse picaço afamado pingo de linda figura

This renowned spirited one, a horse of beautiful figure

Era o senhor das coxilhas sem nunca ter visto o laço

He was the lord of the hills without ever seeing the lasso

Tinha por cama as flexilhas o famoso bagual picaço

His bed was the straw, the famous spirited colt

Trouxe junto com a manada da invernada capororóca

He brought along with the herd from the winter pasture

Bufando e corcoveando e coiceando na massaroca

Snorting, bucking, and kicking in a wild frenzy

E ao chegar na mangueira deixei a poeira baixar

And upon reaching the pen, I let the dust settle

Enquanto a peonada faceira mateava a lhe contemplar

While the cheerful cowboys sipped mate, admiring him

Discussões e gargalhadas lá na frente do galpão

Discussions and laughter in front of the shed

Gavolices e patacuadas das lidas de domação

Capers and antics from the taming chores

Com jeito botei o laço golpeando senti o perigo

With skill, I threw the lasso, feeling the danger

Aos coices e manotaço passei-lhe o pé de amigo

With kicks and hits, I passed as a friendly foot

Arregalei as loncas do lombo daquele picaço enfame

I stretched the straps of the back of that infamous spirited one

Arcado que nem porongo que dá em cerca de arame

Bent like a gourd that hits a wire fence

Alcei a perna seguro no Santo Antônio de prata

I lifted my leg, holding onto the silver handle

Já foi escondendo o quengo no meio das duas patas

It quickly hid its head between its two front legs

Saiu berrando e corcoveando só ouvia o rangir dos bastos

It went out bellowing and bucking; all I heard was the creaking of the saddles

Várzeas, canhadas e coxilhas cruzamos riscando os pastos

Lowlands, canyons, and hills, we crossed, marking the pastures

Ficamos horas extraviados pras bandas do boqueirão

We were lost for hours towards the mouth of the canyon

Às vezes perto das nuvens outras pertinho do chão

Sometimes near the clouds, other times close to the ground

Se debulhando o endiabrado do puarva madurão

The devilish matured colt was threshing

Inté parecia um mandado que vinha rrasgando o chão

It almost seemed like a command tearing through the ground

Entregou-se o rei das coxilhas e atende a qualquer upa

The king of the hills surrendered and responds to any command

Ficou bueno de encilha e bem mansinho de garupa

Became good with the saddle and very gentle in the seat
