Lá na casa da fazenda onde eu vivia

At the farmhouse where I used to live

On a drizzly morning with cloudy skies

Achei no chão do terreiro uma sementinha

I found a little seed on the courtyard ground

Pensei logo em plantá-la no chão molhado

I immediately thought of planting it in the wet soil

O tempo passou depressa e a mocidade

Time passed quickly, and youth

Chegou como chega a noite ao cair da tarde

Came as night arrives at the falling of the evening

Veio morar na fazenda uma caboclinha

A caboclo girl came to live in the farmhouse

Graciosa, bela e meiga e na flor da idade

Graceful, beautiful, sweet, and in the flower of age

Iniciou-se um romance entre eu e ela

A romance began between her and me

Na sombra aconchegante de uma paineira

In the cozy shade of a paineira tree

Dei a ela uma rosa com muita esperança

I gave her a rose with much hope

Que eu colhi de um galhinho daquela roseira

Which I picked from a small branch of that rosebush

Marcamos o casamento pra o fim do ano

We set the wedding for the end of the year

Pra mim só existia ela e pra ela só eu

For me, only she existed, and for her, only me

Pouco mais de uma semana pra o nosso Edílio

Just over a week for our Edílio

A minha flor prometida, doente morreu

My promised flower, fell ill and died

Arranquei o pé de rosas na primavera

I pulled the rosebush in the spring

E plantei na sepultura de minha amada

And planted it in my beloved's grave

Todas tardes eu molhava com o meu pranto

Every evening, I watered it with my tears

A roseira foi murchando e acabou em nada

The rosebush withered and ended in nothing

A chuva se foi embora e o Sol ardente

The rain went away, and the scorching sun

Matou a minha roseira e secou o meu pranto

Killed my rosebush and dried my tears

Só não matou a saudade da caboclinha

It only didn't kill the longing for the caboclo girl

Pois eu vejo a sua imagem em todo o canto

For I see her image everywhere

Por isso é que eu vivo longe da minha terra
