De tudo importar, se para o supremo ser

To import everything, if for the supreme being

De nada importar, se para o homem mortal

Of no importance, if for mortal man

Abarrotam-se os cofres do saber

The coffers of knowledge overflow

Um saber que se torne capital

A knowledge that becomes capital

Um capital que faça o futuro render

A capital that makes the future yield

Os juros da condição de imortal

The interest of the immortal condition

(Mas a morte é certa!)

(But death is certain!)

O cuidadoso esculpir da estátua

The careful sculpting of the statue

Make perpetual the memory of the poet

But one reaches the crossroads of life

O ser pra um lado, pra outro lado o mundo

Being on one side, on the other side the world

Sujeita-se o poeta à servidão da lida

The poet submits to the servitude of toil

Quando a voz da razão fala mais fundo

When the voice of reason speaks louder

E essa voz comanda:

E o bom poeta, sólido afinal

And the good poet, finally solid

Apossa-se da foice ou do martelo

Takes hold of the scythe or the hammer

Para investir do aqui e agora o capital

To invest the capital of here and now

No produzir real de um mundo justo e belo

In the real production of a just and beautiful world

Celebra assim, mortal que já se crê

Thus celebrates, mortal who already believes

O afazer como bem ritual

The doing as a ritual act

Cessar da obsessão pelo supremo ser

Cease the obsession with the supreme being

Nascer do prazer pelo social

Birth of pleasure for the social

E o poeta grita:

And the poet shouts:

Behold the role of the great city
