The corner where I live is a beautiful catwalk

O carijó canta cedo, bem pertinho da janela

The sparrow sings early, right near the window

Eu levanto quando bate o sininho da capela

I wake up when the chapel bell rings

E lá vou eu pro roçado, tenho Deus de sentinela

And off I go to the field, with God as my sentinel

Têm dia que o meu almoço, é um pão com mortadela

Some days my lunch is just bread with bologna

Mas lá no meu ranchinho a mulher e os filhinhos

But in my little ranch, the wife and the little ones

Tem franguinho na panela

Have chicken in the pot

Eu tenho um burrinho preto bão de arado e bão de sela

I have a good black donkey for plowing and riding

Pro leitinho das crianças, a vaquinha Cinderela

For the children's milk, there's Cinderella the cow

Galinhada no terreiro papagaio tagarela

Chickens in the yard, a chatty parrot

Eu ando de qualquer jeito, de butina ou de chinela

I go about however I can, in boots or in slippers

Na roça se a fome aperta, vou apertando a fivela

In the fields, if hunger strikes, I tighten my belt

Quando eu fico sem serviço a tristeza me atropela

When there's no work, sadness overwhelms me

Eu pego uns bicos pra fora, deixo cedo a currutela

I pick up odd jobs outside, leave the small town early

Eu levo meu viradinho é um fundinho de tigela

I bring my little meal, a bowl's worth

É só farinha com ovo, mas da gema bem amarela

It's just flour with egg, but with a very yellow yolk

É esse o meu almoço, que desce seco na goela

That's my lunch, goes down dry in my throat

She does everything for me, and all I do is for her

Não vestimos lã nem linho é no algodão e na flanela

We don't wear wool or linen, it's cotton and flannel

É assim a nossa vida, que levamos na cautela

That's how our life goes, cautious and steady

Se eu morrer Deus dá um jeito, pois a vida é muito bela

If I die, God will sort it out, life is too beautiful
