São Bento era um jovem italiano

São Bento was a young Italian

Desde menino gostava de orar

De família nobre todos romanos

Foi morar em Roma para poder estudar

He went to live in Rome to study

Bento foi levado para o monte

Bento was taken to the mountain

E numa gruta ele foi se abrigar

And in a cave, he took shelter

E ali ficou morando por três anos

Só meditando e orando sem parar

A cruz sagrada seja minha luz

Contra o inimigo venha São Bento

No deserto onde ele se encontrava

Só o eremita podia visitar

Pouco alimento chegou a passar fome

Mas Deus envia alguém pra lhe ajudar

But God sent someone to help him

Na região existia um sacerdote

Que numa noite fazendo seu jantar

Ouviu uma voz que vinha do horizonte

He heard a voice coming from the horizon

Ele parou e ficou a escutar

He stopped and listened

Meu servo Bento está passando fome

My servant Bento is starving

Lá no deserto sem ter o que comer

There in the desert without anything to eat

O sacerdote com muito sacrifício

The priest, with much sacrifice

Partiu depressa para lhe socorrer

Quickly went to help him

Tempos mais tarde Bento foi descoberto

Later, Bento was discovered

Por pastores que a ele visitou

By shepherds who visited him

A sua fama foi logo se espalhando

His fame quickly spread

E muita gente a ele procurou

And many people sought him

Por causa de sua santidade

Because of his holiness

Foi convidado pra ser superior

He was invited to be a superior

De um convento chamado Vicovaro

Of a convent called Vicovaro

Não demorou e ele logo aceitou

He accepted it soon after

Embora ele não concordava

Although he did not agree

Com a forma de vida a seu redor

With the way of life around him

A maneira que os monges viviam

The way the monks lived

Não chegaria ao seguimento do Senhor

Would not lead to the Lord's path

Formou-se contra Bento uma antipatia

Antipathy formed against Bento

Que por pouco sua vida não tirou

That almost took his life

Colocaram veneno em sua taça

They put poison in his cup

Que ao abençoar o vinho ela se quebrou

Which, when blessing the wine, broke

Em seguida disse assim São Bento

Then Saint Bento said

Perdoai meu Senhor os meus irmãos

Forgive me, Lord, my brothers

E depois abandonou o convento

And then he left the convent

Despediu-se e dali se retirou
